It just receives notices from the driver and puts up dialogs, and writes entries to the SoftRAID log whenever anything important happens. It is always running in the background but isn’t required for your SoftRAID volumes to work.
Like the sign, it tells you when things are slowing down, or there is a problem you should deal with. The SoftRAID Monitor is like the traffic sign at the side of the freeway that tells you about traffic conditions. It doesn’t have to be running for you to use a SoftRAID volume and is usually only used a few times a month.
